    Field Trips

I was listening to the X96 Radio from Hell Morning Show this morning, and they were talking about how one of the host's kids is going to Arby's for a field trip. Several other people called in telling stories about visiting McDonalds, Wal-Mart, Hardee's, and other similar places. Emma had a walking field trip last year in which they visited the Auto Zone, the Wonder Bread Outlet, and the 7-Eleven. This year they visited Albertsons. I'm just curious, where have you or your kids been on field trips? Anywhere cool, or unusual, or just plain strange, a la Auto Zone.

When I was in the second grade we walked about 1 1/2 miles to see the truss factory. That was bizarre. Why would second graders care about how to make roof trusses? A girl fainted during the field trip though, she over heated.

I remember going to the zoo and the Wonder Bread factory. Liked the bread factory because they gave us mini loaves of bread at the end.

As for my kids, they have gone to Outback Steakhouse where they were even fed lunch (parents weren't allowed on this trip or I totally would have been there!) Mr. Gatti's (pizza place with games) the post office, and of course the zoo.

Aaron was supposed to be going to Sea World last year, but all field trips for the year were cancelled. :(

I remember when I was in elementary school, my class would visit good old Petersons and Hardee's. We would walk through the meat department. It was a chillin' experience.

i rarely went on field trips, but our kids go all the time. Santa Barbara Zoo, Santa Cruz island, IMAX theater, Point Vicente (Lighthouses), pumpkin patch, the library, etc.

They go on a ton. Sometimes I think they are great, others I think are a waste of time.

We did a lot of field trips "in my day."

In early elementary school I remember going to Domino's Pizza--mostly I remember going through the freezer section.

In middle school we had some kind of unit on business, so all in one day, we went to local businesses, including a doll shop, a sign-making shop, and the local Lawry's office or factory or something. They gave us free Season-All (or whatever Lawry's brand of Season-All is). Fabulous.

In 7th grade a bunch of social studies students went to Washington, DC. That was pretty cool.

Also in 7th grade, the entire grade went to Medieval Times to eat gross food and watch people pretend-joust.

We also did lots of theme-park trips like Magic Mountain, Disneyland, Sea World (which was a bit of a snoozer for me, sorry to say), and Knott's Berry Farm. I'm not sure what the point of those were, other than having fun.

Random related memory: we always had to have our parents fill out permission slips before we were allowed to go on these trips, and I can remember from the time I was old enough to read, reading the disclaimer or waiver that mentions "in the event of sickness, injury, (etc., etc.,) or death" and I remember being completely freaked out as a 6-year-old that I was going to die on the field trip.

That irrational fear lasted me 10 years, and I got a little shiver every time I read that section of the permission slip.

Same here, Knott's Berry Farm, 6 Flags, Disneyland, the Beach. Washington DC. Onece we went on a historical Walking Tour of Monrovia. Very cool. I still remember random local trivia from that 3rd grade trip.
Henry's pre-school has gone to the Zoo, the wildflife refuge, the grocery store, the dentist and a bus ride.
His Kindergarten has only gone to the Pumpkin patch so far.
Why Hardee's? To teach kids not to eat fast food?
